The Work

Somewhere along the way, in our most impressionable stages, we learn how to be acceptable. It’s not for nothing, by any means! We learn how to walk, how to talk, and how to present ourselves and our personas within complex social systems. We find our place within family, culture and community. We learn how to fit in.

Finding our way in the world and operating according to familiar patterns is important. Our families, our cultures and our communities require cohesion and shared values. Community is where we belong!

Our patterns of behavior become problematic, however, if we are repeatedly making choices that do not allow for enough flexibility, growth, or change.

In therapy, we learn how to reflect on old patterns and move ourselves into the uncertain, unfamiliar, yet enlivening moment. In doing, so we can start to learn that what’s been normal for us might be different than what is functional and healthy. Sometimes “normal” patterns from childhood might, in adulthood, keep creativity, joy, or healthier relationships at bay.

Meaningful Relationships

As we walk through change, it is important to do so in ways that respect who we are. As humans, we are social and interdependent. We rely on each other and thrive on the continuity of caring bonds.

In therapy, the most positive changes we make are relational. We learn how to find and receive relational care. We learn how to be in relationships in ways that feel connected and whole. We learn how to shift our relational patterns to allow for a greater capacity to be supported and loved.
