Sometimes life leads us down an unknown path. Something unexpected happens. We lose a job, face a health issue, or a relationship gets shaky. Life brings unforeseen challenges. 

These difficulties can cause us to question everything. Who are we in the face of these challenges? And what’s important? 


Within any difficulty lies a choice. We can stick to what we know, or we can face the challenge in a new way. In these moments, we can sense that something needs to change. We can feel our limitations and our own disappointments, and, we can also feel a desire for something else - a more satisfying and meaningful life. We all want to grow and deepen into who we are. We all want to love and be loved.

But how do we get there?

The Work

Sometimes what is important about us is what is most hidden. Our job in therapy is to listen.

When we pay close attention, we can start to know whether our thoughts and actions come from a place of vitality or from self-protection. We can notice if we are responding to the present moment or reacting from a historical blueprint. We can start to recognize what works and what doesn’t, what feels right and what doesn’t, what is true for us and what isn’t. We can begin to recognize our choices and to make choices that better serve who we really are.

We all find safety in the familiar. Often, this tendency serves us by allowing us to move toward situations we know how to handle. This tendency becomes problematic, however, when we feel stuck making choices that no longer feel good. Perhaps what is familiar is also painful, dishonest, or disregards something needing our care and attention.

In therapy, we lovingly confront these patterns. It can feel scary to move into the unfamiliar. We learn to move through the fear and start making choices that feel kind, honest, integrated, and self-respecting.

Meaningful Relationships

We can all learn how to find our way back home. We can find what is vital and meaningful.

Although this path is singular and uniquely yours, it need not be lonely.

As we walk, it is important that we learn to do so in ways that respect who we are. As humans, we are social and interdependent. We rely on each other and and thrive on the continuity of caring bonds.

In therapy, we learn how to find and receive relational care. We learn how to be in relationships in ways that feel connected and whole. We find ways to shift our relational patterns that allow a greater capacity for being loved and supported.
